STARTING MMA TRAINING

If you have limited or no experience in the combat arts, you can still jump right into any of our beginners classes. In the beginners classes, we focus on MMA basics, BJJ basics, and Submission grappling basics, depending on which class you go to. These classes are extremely important!

The techniques used in Mixed Martial Arts are plentiful, but every fighter follows the same basic fundamental structure. MMA beginners classes are on Wednesdays and the focus is usually on the MMA stance, basic movement for MMA, where to keep your hands, basic MMA striking defense, basic MMA strikes, some wrestling basics for MMA, and finally, some basic Jiu-Jitsu for MMA.

We have separate Stand-up beginners classes on Tuesdays and they are geared toward the standing aspect of a Mixed Martial Arts fight. We use a mixture of Boxing, Muay Thai, and Wrestling, modified to work within the sport of MMA. In the stand up fundamentals classes, the focus is similar to the MMA fundamentals classes, minus the ground game.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu concentrates mostly on ground techniques and is practiced with the gi/kimono. Our BJJ beginners classes are on Fridays and consist of fundamental gi grips, basic take downs and defense, self-defense, and basic BJJ ground positions and escape techniques.

Submission grappling is sometimes looked at as the ‘no-gi’ version of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with some added techniques from Wrestling, Judo, and Sambo. The Submission grappling basics classes are on Saturdays and focus on basic standing Wrestling and no-gi Judo techniques, basic ground positions and escape techniques.

At the higher levels of competition, matches are won with usually very simple techniques. Occasionally you will see someone win with a flashy move but it’s certainly not the norm, nor is it high percentage. Even world champions practice the basics all the time. He/She who has the better basics usually wins!
